Hunter Corbett, D. D. , LL. D.

( 1835 1920 )

Hunter Corbett, a native of Pennsylvania of the United States, and a college graduate, earned his D.D. degree in the Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1863 Hunter Corbett and his wife sailed from New York across the Atlantic via South Africa, Australia, the Philippines and Shanghai. After a journey of 165 days, they arrived in Chefoo in January, 1864. They then proceeded to Tengehow to study the Chinese language for one year and finally returned to Chefoo.

They took lodgings in Chu-Chi village and Shih-Nan-Ho. He contacted the high priest of the temple on the hill-top and was able to purchase a few plots of the terrace fields on the northeast slope of the hill. On these plots he built school buildings for both boys and girls. About ten years after the merger of both schools, he built new school buildings for a middle school arranging to have a four-year term under the old system. The school was named Hwei Wen in Chinese or the Hunter Corbett Academy in English. Mrs. Corbett, assisted by her husband, started a clinic, which preceded the opening of a hospital- The Temple Hill Hospital. In his life time he established altogether 40 schools more in the eastern part of the Shantung province. By an official decree, Kwang Hsu, the emperor of China, granted him a Double Dragon medal, the highest civilian honor. Hunter Corbett passed away at the age of 85 and was buried in the Temple Hill Cemetery. In the following year the Academy had a merger with Shih Yih – formerly the Temple Hill English School and was renamed Yih Wen School.

Rev. George Cornwell

(1867-1909)

George Cornwell, a native of the state of New York, graduated from the Amherst College and Union Theological Seminary. He and his wife arrived in Chefoo in 1894. He became an assistant of Hunter Corbett in establishing the museum and supervising construction works. He assisted the Chinese in establishing the YMCA which held the slogan of Morality, Wisdom and Good Health (or: High Moral, knowledge Seeking and Physical Well-being), He perceived that within the local community there was a lack of knowledge on both English and commercial subjects. His concept was received favorably by local gentries and businessmen. He successfully raised the required donations for starting the Temple Hill English School in 1897. He compiled his own handouts. He requested the housewives of the Presbyterian Missionaries to be volunteer teachers and made an appeal to his friends in the United States to provide the school with a full-time teacher. Eventually, William Booth and Mrs. Booth arrived. After ten years or so, successful results appeared: many graduates were qualified to study further in England and others went to the United States under the Tsing Hua Project. Unfortunately, when cholera plagued North China in 1909, George Cornwell and his wife both died and were buried in the Temple Hill Presbyterian Cemetery. He was respected and was widely recognized as being helpful, friendly, gentle, magnanimous and willing to advise. All of those high qualities were engraved on a marble arch erected in front of his tomb with the money raised from the local Chinese community.

William C. Booth, M. A.

(1878 – 1969)

William C. Booth, a graduate of the Northwestern University and later the University of Chicago with a Masters degree, arrived in Chefoo in 1903 to become the assistant principal of the Temple Hill English School. However, six years later when George Cornwell died, he became the principal. As China became a Republic in 1911, the school was renamed Shin Yih. In 1921, the merger between Shih Yih and Hwei Wen Schools took place and a new name was given: Yih Wen School. Eight years later when the school was well established as a commercial college, William Booth decided that a qualified Chinese should take over his work. The first Chinese principal was Esi-Koo Loh, followed by Chiu-Yuan Lin and then Shiang-Cheng Wang. After the Pearl Harbor Incident, the school property was seized by the Japanese military. It just happened that William Booth was on a business trip to Tsingtao when he was interned by the Japanese. He was repatriated back to the United States in 1942 under the Internees Exchange Program. William Booth dedicated himself for almost 40 years in Chefoo, toiling hard to achieve remarkable results. He was kind, compassionate, sincere and full of love for all. Not only his students but also the people of the city gave him the respect that de deserved. In the latter period, in addition to his teaching, he was responsible for the matters of finance and the school Board of Directors. In 1969,    he died in California at the age of 91.
